NEPRA for raising electricity tariff by Rs2 per unit - Ayub
Islamabad: Federal Minister for Petroleum Omar Ayub that there is no choice available to the incumbent government apart from raising tariffs of the electricity.

He made these remarks in a presser here in Islamabad today where he hinted at raising the tariffs again.

The minister went on to say that power tariff will be raised step wise in duration of one and a half year.

He added that National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) wants to hike electricity tariff by Rs2 per unit but we [read government] does not want to burden masses immediately.

The minister apprised attendants that federal government has to pay Rs302 billion to power sector in the next two years.
On the other hand, federal government is mulling over hiking tariffs of electricity and gas yet again.

As per details garnered, government has reportedly bowed down before conditions tabled by International Monetary Fund (IMF) aimed at increasing tariffs of electricity and gas.

The federal government has also reportedly agreed to give National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) complete tariff-setting authority, free from any government’s meddling.

The government has also agreed to end electricity subsidy for all consumers apart from the one offered to small consumers.
In the industrial sector, government will offer ‘limited subsidy’ to exporters only.

Likewise, Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) will be made autonomous body ascertain the tariff of gas.
