Complete text of PM Imran's address to nation
I want to take you [the nation] into confidence about the developments since yesterday morning.
After what happened in Pulwama, we offered peace to india. I understand the pain of the families. I have visited hospitals and seen the pain of people affected by violence. We have lost 70,000 of our people and I know what those who are left behind and those who are injured feel.
We offered India that we will cooperate. It is not in Pakistan’s interest to let our land be used for terrorism. There is no dispute in this. But, I feared that India would still take action and I had warned India that we will be compelled to respond because no sovereign country can allow this.
When India struck yesterday, the army chief and I spoke. We did not respond immediately and in haste as this would have been irresponsible and resulted in casualties on their side. Once we had assessed the damage we were ready to take action.
The only purpose of our action today was that if you can come into our country, we can also do the same. Two of there MiGs have been shot down. It is important that where do we go from here. From here we must use our heads and act with wisdom.
All wars are miscalculated. No one knows where they will lead to. World War I was supposed to end in weeks, but it took six years. The USA never expected the war on terror to last 17 years.
I want to ask India, with the weapons you have and the weapons we have, can we afford such a miscalculation? If this escalates, matters will no longer be in my control or [PM] Modi’s.
I invite you once again. We are ready. We understand the grief India has suffered in Pulwama and are ready for any dialogue on terrorism. I repeat that better sense should prevail.
Let’s sit together and settle this with talks.
