Instagram record broken by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have just broken an Instagram record.
Just five hours and 45 minutes after Prince Harry and his wife unveiled their new Instagram account on Tuesday, @SussexRoyal had already amassed 1 million followers, a milestone that Guinness World Records said was reached in record time.
Since breaking the record, the account has more than doubled in size. There was such a rush of activity on Instagram that the social media platform crashed for a short while.
The previous record was held by K-pop star Kang Daniel who reached the one million milestone in January with a selfie. It took him 11 hours and 36 minutes to set the record, which is almost double the time it took Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The record before that was held by Pope Francis who got one million followers in 12 hours.
Previously, Prince Harry and his brother, second in line to the British throne, Prince William, had a shared account on instagram which was run by Kensington Gardens.
British Royals who are directly in line for the throne are not allowed to have private social media accounts. Their social media presence is managed by official accounts.
