Qatar's Emir calls for peaceful solution in surprise visit to Iran
Tehran: Qatar's Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, called for a peaceful resolution to regional tensions during a surprise visit to Iran on Sunday.

The visit came amidst fears of escalation after Iran fired missiles at an American base in Iraq in retaliation to a US drone attack killing Major General Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad.

Qatar's state-run news agency said that the Emir is expected to meet with Iran's President Hassan Rouhani, among other high-ranking officials of the Iranian regime.

In a televised conference with the Iranian President, Sheikh Tamim thanked Iran for providing air and land routes after Saudi Arabia and its Gulf allies closed their airspace and imposed a boycott on Qatar in 2017.

Qatar is a closely allied with both the US and Iran, with which it shares a giant oil field.
