Coronavirus death toll rises to 1491, panic grips world
Wuhan: The death toll in an outbreak of a new coronavirus in China has climbed to 1491 as more 121 people died in a single day, and more than 64,977 people have been infected, causing a global alarm.

Among 1123 deceased, 1068 people belonged to Chinese city of Wuhan.

At least 14887 cases of coronavirus have been reported in China in last 24 hours.

Most traumas of the deadly virus have occurred in Hubei Province, China. The province with a population of 60 million is completely locked down. All schools and business centers in Tianjing, China, have been closed until further notice. The decision was taken by the authorities following the worsening situation in the country.

The rapidly spreading virus has created fear and anxiety around the world. Chinese President Xi Jinping said that the spread of a deadly new virus is accelerating and country is at a ‘critical stage’. Following the worsening situation, the Chinese President contacted the World Health Organization for medical assistance.

Chinese authorities have also instructed citizens to postpone their marriage ceremony, while funeral ceremonies were also conducted on a smaller scale.

The virus, which started in Wuhan city in Hubei province last month, has since spread to other major cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Three more cases of Coronavirus emerged in Hong Kong and the total number of patients has raised to 53.

WHO advance team leaves for China


World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global health emergency on January 30. The whole world needs to take action against virus in China," said WHO spokesperson.

WHO has sent a special team of international experts to fight China's coronavirus. American health experts are likely to be the part of the team.

The special team will investigate the Coronavirus epidemic in China.

The team is led by Dr Bruce Aylward, a "veteran of past public health emergencies," WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a tweet.

Novel coronavirus has officially been named 'COVID-19'. The virus was first reported in China on December 31, 2019.

Situation other than China


At least 28 countries have confirmed cases and several nations have evacuated their citizens from Hubei. Major airlines have suspended flights to and from China in an attempt to stop the spread.

Other than China, the cases have also been found in Singapore, Thailand, South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Japan, Australia, France and the United States. 1 case of Coronavirus has also been reported from Nepal. Finland and Sweden also confirmed each 1 coronavirus case in the country.

There are seven new coronavirus cases in Singapore. The total number of people infected here has grown to 33 while the tall of coronavirus affected people has risen to 25 in South Korea.

A man in the Philippines has died from the Wuhan coronavirus -- the first time a death has been reported outside mainland China since the outbreak began in December.

Reportedly, three cases of coronavirus have been reported in Philippines.

Another 41 people on a cruise ship off the coast of Japan have tested positive for the new coronavirus - bringing the total to 61.

A total of 3,700 passengers and workers, including three Americans, are quarantined on the ship for at least two weeks, which is harbored in the port city of Yokohama.

Nine cases of coronavirus have been identified in United Kingdom while coronavirus has been confirmed in three persons in the southern state of Kerala in India. 1 of the three patient with confirmed coronavirus infection has a travel history from China, the state govt said.

In USA's Washington DC, three more medical cases feared to be revealed while three people undergo medical examination. Two cases were reported in Houston and Seattle while another case was reported in Florida. Five cases of coronavirus were confirmed from Arizona, Illinois, California and Washington.

Reportedly, another case of Coronavirus has been confirmed in one person in Washington, while one coronavirus case has been reported in Boston, United States. With more four cases of coronavirus in California. 1 case in Texas and 2 cases in other american states, the total number of patients in California has raised to seven and fifteen across the country.

In Canada, coronavirus was confirmed in 7 people.

In France, the number of Coronavirus victims has increased to eleven. Ministry of Health France (Ministère des Affaires sociales et de la santé) also confirmed the cases of coronavirus in the country.

Vietnam confirmed thirteen case of coronavirus. The Vietnamese citizen returned home from Wuhan on January 17, authorities confirmed.

There are two confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Russia. Following the threat of virus, Russia has closed its entire border to the east to stop the spread of coronavirus.

In Germany, the number of people affected by the coronavirus has increased to fourteen.

Italy has confirmed three cases of the deadly coronavirus, shortly after the outbreak was declared a global health emergency.

Italian Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, revealed that two Chinese tourists have tested positive for the virus. He has since ordered all air traffic to be blocked between Italy and China.

Italy is the fourth European country, after France, Finland and Germany, to have confirmed cases.

In Taiwan, more cases of Corona virus have been reported, totaling 18 while at least three people were shifted to hospital on suspicion of the Coronavirus in India's capital city.

First cases of the deadly coronavirus in the Middle East have been confirmed in the United Arab Emirates. The infected patients are four members of a Chinese family that had traveled from Wuhan, China to UAE, the country’s Ministry of Health and Community Protection said.

Meanwhile, UK-based researchers warned of a real possibility that China will not be able to contain the virus.

Travel restrictions came in place in several affected states of China. From Sunday, private vehicles will be banned from central districts of Wuhan.

Wuhan and more than a dozen other cities in the province were locked down in a rapidly expanding quarantine effort marked by transport shutdowns and other restrictions on movement.

Chinese authorities advised its people to stop travel into and out of China to stop the outbreak that has killed more than 700 people so far.

The center of outbreak, Wuhan, is home to around 8.9 million people. The health officials are taking significant measures to contain the virus, while instructing people to follow precautionary measures.

The health authorities declared country at the "most critical stage" of prevention and control.

The outbreak came as millions of people across China are travelling within the country for the Lunar New Year week-long holiday, whereas thousands are also travelling abroad to their friends and families.

Pakistan on high alert


Over 250 Pakistani returned home as flight operation was resumed. So far, no cases have been confirmed in Pakistan. However, four Pakistani students in Wuhan, China have been diagnosed with the virus.

Eight suspected cases of coronavirus were reported in Karachi's Agha Khan Hospital.

Reportedly, out of eight, seven had visited to China in January.

Another case of coronavirus was reported in Multan a few days ago while two patients were admitted to services hospital on suspicion of coronavirus.

On the other hand, it is being said that no proper labs or facilities are available to test coronavirus in Pakistan.

Presently, doctors are trying to diagnose coronavirus through symptoms only.

The flights operation between Guangzhou and Lahore has also suspended until January 30.

On January 23, Pakistan National Health Services Department issued an advisory and put Pakistan on high alert indicating the fears of outbreak in Pakistan.

The department also issued a statement saying that all passengers arriving from China would have to undergo a medical checkup for which special counters would be constituted on the airports.

What is the virus?


Known for now as 2019-nCoV, the virus originated in a seafood market in Wuhan that was involved in the illegal transactions of wild animals. This is being termed as the new form of coronavirus not previously identified in humans.



Wuhan’s coronavirus can cause a range of symptoms including respiratory issues, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. Mild symptoms include common cold, while more serious are likely to lead to pneumonia.

Migraines and fever are also possible, which can last for several days.

US medical experts said that symptoms from the new virus, temporarily named 2019-nCoV, may take up to 14 days to appear.

Precautionary measures:


According to World Health Organization (WHO), avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of such as shortness of breath, coughing, sneezing, cold etc. Since, scientists believe that the virus has been transferred from animals to humans; it is being suggested by health experts that everyone should cook meat and eggs thoroughly.

Moreover, people have also been instructed to avoid live animal markets and raw meats altogether. Doctors are also suggesting washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
