Man handed death sentence on video call in Singapore
Punithan Genasan, a 37-year-old Malaysian, was told on Friday by the Singapore court that he would be hanged for masterminding a drug deal that took place in 2011.
“For the safety of all involved in the proceedings, the hearing for Public Prosecutor v Punithan A/L Genasan was conducted by video-conferencing,” a spokesperson for Singapore’s Supreme Court told Reuters.
The spokesperson said that it was the first criminal case of the city where the capital punishment was given remotely.
The country has hanged hundreds of people including foreigners over narcotics related offences as it has zero-tolerance policy against illegal drugs.
