India goes to vote in first stage of polling
New Delhi: 142 million Indians are eligible to cast a vote today in the first phase of general elections.
Today voting will be held in 91 constituencies across 20 states and federally-administered areas.
898.9 million Indians are eligible to cast votes in the general elections which will take place in seven rounds. Voting will be spread across 39 days, and final ballots will be counted on 23 may with results expected to be announced the same day.
Opinion polls indicate that the Narendra Modi led alliance may secure a thin majority of 273 of the 543 seats in the Lok Sabha, the Indian parliament.
