ECP disqualifies Faisal Vawda over dual nationality case

Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Wednesday disqualified Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Faisal Vawda over alleged concealment of his dual nationality at the time of contesting the National Assembly (NA) election on Karachi seat in the 2018 general elections. 

The election governing body declared Faisal Vawda ineligible for holding the seat of a senator.

A three-member bench—headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja announced the reserved verdict today.

ECP said that the PTI leader had submitted a fake undertaking to the electoral body during the 2018 general elections—lying regarding his dual citizenship. 

The ECP court has directed Vawda to return within two months along all the salaries and privileges he received from the government during his term as member of the National Assembly (MNA). 

A three-member ECP bench had reserved the verdict in December 2021 on applications seeking disqualification of Vawda over allegedly concealing information about his dual nationality. 

The judgement came amid Pakistan’s high temperature in politics—with opposition parties gearing up for a decisive movement against PTI, both inside and outside parliament. 

As per political experts, the verdict definitely have an impact on the country’s future political scenario.
