Legendary singer ‘Ahmed Rushdi’ remembered on his 38th death anniversary
Karachi: Renowned playback singer Ahmed Rushdi is being remembered on his 38th death anniversary on April 11 (today).
Rushdi was born in Hyderabad Deccan, India, in 1934. He moved to Karachi after Partition and began his career with Radio Pakistan.
He is considered as the first pop singer of South Asia, he also sang South Asia's first pop song ‘Ko Ko korina’ in the film Armaan which was screened in 1966. He is also believed to be a key contributor to the golden age of Pakistani film music.
The song ‘Ko Ko Korina’ is one of the most eminent tunes in the history of Pakistan.
The legendary star rose to fame with song ‘Bandar Road Se Kemari’ and found unprecedented success as a playback artist from the mid-1950s to early 1980s.
Ahmed Rushdi recorded approximately 5000 songs for 583 released films, highest number of film songs in the history of Pakistani cinema.
He sung song in various languages including Urdu, English, Punjabi, Sindhi, Gujarati and Bengali.
The star died of a heart attack at the age of 48 on April 11 in 1983.
Twenty years after his death he was awarded with ‘Sitara-e-Imtiaz’ for his contributions to the field of music in 2003.
