Opener Rory Burns made 58 runs only for the English side to lose six wickets for a measly 138.
Jonny Bairstow carried the innings with Chris Woakes, Jofra Archer and Stuart Broad but eventually gave his wicket to Nathan Lyon, capping of a disappointing day for the English.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan showed concern following England’s abysmal performance.
"Many will be talking about batting orders but the basics are do you know where your off stump is and can you play a forward defence?" he said.
Australia lost David Warner in the early stages of their innings however the day ended with Australia at 30-1, trailing by 228 runs.
They find themselves in a promising position after England’s hiccup in batting and will be eager to make it 2-0 in the series.
