“The Squad”: Who are the congresswomen that Trump is attacking
American president, Donald Trump, has been severely criticized after attacking a group of congresswomen who he told to “go back and help fix” their “crime-infested countries.” All the women that Trump attacked are American nationals.
Although the President did not name anyone in his infamous tweet, it is widely accepted that he was attacking the group of four popularly known as “The Squad.” Who are these four women?
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was elected as a congresswomen from the 14th District of New York in the midterms held in 2018.
Popularly known as AOC, at 29, Ocasio-Cortez is the youngest woman to have served in congress.
She is of Puerto Rican descent and speaks Spanish fluidly.
Although Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been criticized by senior Democrats for being too far left, she is immensely popular on social media, with over 4.7 million followers on twitter alone.
She is a progressive politician who supports policies on immigration, equality, taxation, health care and climate change.
Ilhan Omar was born in Mogadishu, Somalia. She became a congresswoman in the midterms of 2018 from Minnesota’s fifth district.
She is one of the only two Muslim women in the congress.
Ilhan Omar is known to be pro-immigration and has opposed President Trump’s stance on immigration and his travel ban.
She supports expanding Medicare for all, raising the minimum wage to $15 and free tuition fee for students.
She has been criticized by fellow Democrats and Republicans for her criticism on Israel. She has also received death threats, and has been made part of a conspiracy theory about planning 9/11.
Rashida Tlaib was born in Michigan to parents of Palestinian descent. She was elected from Michigan’s 13th District in the midterms of 2018.
She is the first person of Palestinian descent to serve in congress and along with Ilhan Omar, she is one of the only two Muslim women to have been elected.
She swore in on the Quran instead of the Bible.
Rashida Tlaib is a Socialist Democrat who supports impeaching President Trump and relaxing immigration policies. Along with other members of The Squad, she supports universal healthcare for all.
She is a critic of both Israel and Saudi Arabia.
Ayanna Pressley serves Massachusetts’s seventh district and alongside the other members of The Squad, she was elected in the midterms of 2018.
In the primary election, she defeated ten times incumbent Mike Capuano, then ran her election campaign unopposed.
She is also the first African American woman to be elected from Massachusetts.
Ayanna Pressley also supports impeaching Donald Trump and is known to be a very vocal critic of the President, calling him “racist” in her victory speech.
