Auckland: Three powerful earthquakes rocks New Zealand on Thursday night and Friday morning, prompting tsunami warnings that were later stood down.

According to details, the most powerful earthquake was of 8.1 magnitudes that hit some 620 miles northeast of New Zealand on Friday morning. This was followed by two quakes of 7.4 and 7.3 magnitudes.

Although small tsunami waves were seen on the eastern coasts but there were no reports of serious damage or casualties.

Authorities ordered evacuation warnings for residents living in coastal areas following the third earthquake, which were later lifted after largest waves passed.

Tsunami warnings were also issued for Hawaii and American Samoa, but later stood down.

People living nearby coastal areas have been advised to go back homes but warned to stay off beaches.

Following the earthquake, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern posted on Instagram: "Hope everyone is ok out there."

Earlier in 2011, a magnitude 6.3 quake hit the New Zealand city of Christchurch leaving 185 people dead and destroying much of its downtown.
