Pakistan calls for boosting int’l cooperation to offset landmines’ multiple threats
Islamabad: Pakistan has called for strengthening international cooperation in mine action to counter multiple threats posed by landmines and other explosives to civilians and infrastructure.
As per sources, the move is to safeguard UN peace-keeping missions and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In a statement submitted to the UN Security Council, Ambassador Munir Akram stressed over the high number of civilian casualties caused by landmines, explosive war remnants (ERW) and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
Following the ministerial level debate on mine action, he said the IEDs restrict the mobility of UN peacekeepers, spread fear across communities and undermine peacekeeping mandates.
“As one of the largest troop-contributing country to the UN peace-keeping operations, Pakistan attaches immense importance to addressing the challenges posed by land mines,” he added.
Ambassador Akram further stated that enhancing consultations with host countries and respecting their ownership should be a part of a comprehensive approach to counter the IED threat.
Pakistan has a rich experience in the development and implementation of a national counter IED strategy, he said, offering training for Troop and Police Contributing Countries at its Peacekeeping enters.
