FM discusses bilateral ties, Afghan peace process with US Secretary of State
Islamabad: Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood discussed bilateral ties, Afghan peace process and Daniel Pearl case in telephonic conversation with United States (US) Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken.
According to details, Pakistan and the new US administration have agreed to collectively work on advancing the two bilateral agenda of both countries along with promoting common interests in region and beyond.
Shah Mehmood Qureshi extended felicitations to Mr. Blinken on assuming his office and underscored Pakistan’s commitment to forging a comprehensive partnership with the US based on convergence of interests on a whole range of issues.
Highlighting the transformation in Pakistan, FM Qureshi stressed that the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan had a new vision that placed premium on forging economic partnership, building a peaceful neighborhood, and enhancing regional connectivity.
Shah Mehmood told Secretary Blinken that peace in Afghanistan was only possible through a negotiated political settlement between the two countries.
“It was essential to have reduction in violence leading to ceasefire and to work towards securing an inclusive political solution in Afghanistan. Pakistan had facilitated the Afghan peace process and remained committed to working with the United States as a partner for peace,” FM said.
FM also shed light on Pakistan’s role and sacrifices well in the fight against extremism and terrorism.
Secretary Blinken, while acknowledging the sacrifices of the people of Pakistan, said that both Pakistan and the US had a range of areas to engage on.
Referring to the Daniel Pearl case, Shah Mehmood said that it was important and in the mutual interest that justice is served through legal means. The Foreign Minister highlighted the steps being taken in this regard.
FM and US State Secretary agreed to together work on the development and progress of region.
