On his official twitter handle, the minister said according to the calendar prepared by the science ministry, this year Eid will be celebrated across the country on May 14.

The minster wrote, “Although the final announcement of Eid is to be made by the Ruet Hilal Committee”.

“According to the calendar and Ruet App created by Ministry of Science and Technology, the moon will be visible on May 13 and Eidul Fitr will fall on May 14,” he added.

It is pertinent to mention here that a meeting of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee has been convened on Wednesday, May 12 for Shawwal moon sighting in Islamabad.

This isn’t the first time Chaudhry has locked horns with Pakistan’s moon-sighting committee. Last year, he announced that his ministry would make an Islamic calendar with Eid, pre-decided before the official announcement.

The Shawwal moon is first sighted in Saudi Arabia which confirms the date of Eid in other countries and this year the festival is expected to fall on Thursday, May 13 in the Kingdom.

Just like last year, this year also the celebrations won't be grand due to coronavirus lockdown. However, the Muslims will be celebrating Eid at their houses maintain social distancing.
