Suspected extremist attack: Over 130 killed in Burkina Faso village
Suspected extremists have killed more than 130 civilians in an overnight attack on a village in northern Burkina Faso, in one of the worst attacks in the country beset by violence.
The assailants struck during the night on Friday, killing residents of the village of Solhan in Yagha province and also burned homes and a market.
The government announced three days of national mourning, while details from the attack were still emerging on Saturday.
Moreover, the country is facing a deepening security crisis, like many of its neighbors, as armed groups carry out raids and kidnappings across the region.
In May, 30 people died in an attack in the east of Burkina Faso.
The security forces, however, are currently looking for the perpetrators.
In 2018 there were under 200 fatalities in Burkina Faso, rising to almost 2,000 last year.
The violence in Burkina Faso has rapidly displaced more than 1 million people since 2019, while the largely arid country is also hosting around 20,000 refugees from neighbouring Mali.
