President of Haiti assassinated at home
The President of Haiti, Jovenel Moïse, has been assassinated at his private residence, according to local reports.
The news was confirmed by Haitian Prime Minister Claude Joseph who said that Jovonel Moïse was killed in his private residence in Port-au-Prince around 1 a.m. local time by a group of assailants, Haitian Prime Minister Claude Joseph said in a Wednesday statement.
The statement did not identify the assailants, but said they were Spanish-speaking.
The first lady has also sustained injuries in gunshot, the statement said.
The attack has come following protests against Moïse's government, and calls for his resignation. He has served as Haiti's president since February 2017.
Pm has termed the attack as "odious, inhumane, and barbarous."
