Army Act Amendment Bill is set to be presented in Senate today

The Army Act Amendment Bill is set to be presented before the Senate today (Friday) for formal approval.

According to the agenda issued for today’s session, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif will table the Army Act Amendment Bill in the upper house. Alongside this, he will also present the Pakistan Air Force Act Amendment Bill and the Pakistan Navy Ordinance Amendment Bill for approval.

In addition, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar is scheduled to present the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Amendment Bill for Senate approval.

These bills were passed by the National Assembly a day earlier. On the occasion, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif expressed gratitude to all coalition partners for supporting the legislation and ensuring smooth passage.

It is worth noting that, following the approval of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, the National Assembly has already approved the Army Act 2025. Under this new law, a fresh notification will be issued appointing the Army Chief as the Chief of Defence Forces, upon which the Army Chief’s tenure will restart.

The amended law further outlines that the Chief of Defence Forces will oversee the restructuring and integration of all branches of the Pakistan Army. Moreover, the Prime Minister, on the recommendation of the Chief of Defence Forces, will appoint the Commander National Strategic Command.

According to the new Act, the tenure of the Commander National Strategic Command will be three years, with the option of a three-year extension. The legislation also stipulates that the position of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee will be abolished from November 27.
