Beijing: Chinese-owned social media platform TikTok has extended maximum video length on its platform to ten minutes — a marked increase from the current three-minute limit.

Many TikTok users were greeted with the notification that they’d be able to upload videos up to 10 minutes long. The update is taking place globally.

This is a big change and will definitely curb the need for “part two” or more videos.

The move comes as rivals such as YouTube, Facebook and Instagram have built out their own TikTok-like short-form video features.

“We’re always thinking about new ways to bring value to our community and enrich the TikTok experience,” company’s representative shared in a statement.

“Last year, we introduced longer videos, giving our community more time to create and be entertained on TikTok. Today, we’re excited to start rolling out the ability to upload videos that are up to 10 minutes, which we hope would unleash even more creative possibilities for our creators around the world.”

YouTube, however, has been threatened enough about TikTok’s growth to launch its own short-form video rival directly in its own app, YouTube Shorts.

YouTube wasn’t the only social app that’s taken notice of the TikTok threat, as Instagram launched its TikTok clone, Instagram Reels, in 2020.

Since then, Instagram has rolled out several Reels features that are similar to those on TikTok, such as its duet-like Remix feature.

Moreover, it also expanded Reels to Facebook. In the meantime, Snapchat launched a TikTok-like video feature.

The latest development also comes less than a year after TikTok, owned by Chinese internet conglomerate ByteDance, tripled the maximum length of videos posted to its platform from 60 seconds to three minutes, Variety reported.

TikTok is a video-focused social networking service owned by Chinese company ByteDance Ltd. It hosts a variety of short-form user videos, from genres like pranks, stunts, tricks, jokes, dance, and entertainment.
