Radio host files lawsuit against OpenAI
Defamation lawsuit is filed against OpenAI over an alleged fake legal complaint generated by ChatGPT.
Washington: Radio host Mark Walters has filed a defamation lawsuit against OpenAI, claiming that the AI language model ChatGPT created a false legal document that falsely accused him of defrauding.
The lawsuit was filed in Georgia court.
According to the court documents, Walters alleges that journalist Fred Riehl requested ChatGPT to provide a summary of a Washington case involving Attorney General Bob Ferguson and the Second Amendment Foundation.
However, instead of providing an accurate summary, the chatbot falsely identified Walters as being involved in the case and accused him of financial misconduct.
The fabricated complaint named Walters as the treasurer and chief financial officer of the Second Amendment Foundation, alleging that he misappropriated funds for personal expenses and manipulated financial records.
Walters contends that when the bot was pressed for more details, it generated a completely fake complaint that bore no resemblance to the actual case, including an erroneous case number.
