Rawalpindi:  An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Monday turned down the bail plea of Pakistan Tehreek Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shehryar Afridi in a case related to attack on the Army’s General Headquarters in Rawalpindi on May 9.

ATC Jude Hamid Hussain passed the order on the plea of the PTI leader, and extended his judicial remand till July 24.

The judge directed the investigation officer to submit  challan on the next date of hearing.

Under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (3MPO), the former federal minister was apprehended from Sector F-8 of Islamabad.

The countrywide protests took place on May 9—the day when PTI Chairman Imran Khan was arrested from the premises of the Islamabad High Court in Qadir Trust case.  The protesters set many buildings on fire and attacked the military installations besides setting the Corps Commander’s house ablaze in Lahore’s Cantonment area.

The other  provinces including Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and capital city Islamabad also witnessed violent protests on the said day.

In reaction, Pakistan Army termed May 9 as the black day in the country’s history while the government authorities launched crackdown against the PTI workers and supporters for their alleged involvement in May 9 incidents.
