Stephania Bell's perspective

Jahmyr Gibbs injured his hamstring in practice the Friday prior to the Week 5 contest and was immediately listed as Questionable. The next day he was downgraded to Doubtful and by Sunday he was ruled out. Gibbs did not practice at all the following week and was out for Week 6 as well. He returned to limited practice on Wednesday and Thursday, then upgraded to full on Friday. Gibbs is off the pregame injury status report and is expected to play but the question for fantasy managers (which has been a question all season) is just how much action Gibbs will see. Fellow running back David Montgomery has been the primary ball carrier for the Lions to this point but he is Out with a rib cartilage injury. When Montgomery missed the Week 3 contest with a thigh bruise, Gibbs played 59 percent of the snaps (as opposed to an average of 38 percent of snaps in the other three games he has played this season). Craig Reynolds - who picked up the bulk of the work in Week 6 after Montgomery left injured -- is on the injury report himself this week with hamstring and toe injuries. He is listed as Questionable. Coach Dan Campbell was very open with reporters Friday saying "I'd like to say we want to be careful with him but the reality of it is we need him. So we'll go as far as he can take us here, trying to be as smart as we can, but he's got to go. And he's ready."

Stephania Bell's perspective

Diontae Johnson was activated from the Reserve/Injured List on Saturday and added to the active roster. Johnson has been out since injuring his hamstring in Week 1. He was subsequently placed on injured reserve and missed the following Weeks 2-5 with an additional week off due to the Steelers Week 6 bye. Johnson was designated for return on Monday, opening his 21-day practice window. Fully participating in practice throughout the week, Johnson proved he was ready to return. He is off the pregame status report and will bring his Mike Tomlin cited "expert route running" to Los Angeles for Sunday's matchup against the Rams.

Pat Freiermuth suffered a hamstring injury in Week 4 and was initially projected to miss two to three weeks. With the Steelers' bye happening in Week 6, it was largely expected Freiermuth would return this week. To that end, he returned to a full practice Wednesday. Unfortunately, on Thursday he aggravated the hamstring and did not participate Friday. On Saturday, the Steelers elected to place him on Injured Reserve meaning Freiermuth will be out at least until Week 11 when the Steelers will face the Browns.

DK Metcalf has been listed on the injury report weekly with a rib injury suffered in Week 2 but has yet to miss any games. Things are different this week. Metcalf suffered a hip injury during Sunday's game and this latest ailment could threaten his status for Week 6. On a positive note, he was able to get in a limited practice session Friday after sitting out Wednesday and Thursday but coach Pete Carroll remained uncertain about his availability. Per ESPN's Brady Henderson, Carroll described Metcalf as "pretty sore still," noting the decision is "going to be all the way up to game time."

Zach Charbonnet suffered a hamstring injury that is described as "not serious" by Carroll but the running back did not participate in any practice sessions this week. Carroll indicated Charbonnet can still "feel it" but said they would not make a decision until Sunday morning.

Stephania Bell's perspective

Aaron Jones has been limited in practice throughout the week and is listed as questionable but he is expected to return to action, barring a setback. The seemingly mild hamstring injury that Jones originally suffered in Week 1 has now cost him three games and limited him in a fourth. As is often the nature of these injuries, coming back to full health is not necessarily smooth sailing. ESPN's Rob Demovsky reported on Jones' recovery this week, noting after his one post-injury limited game appearance in Week 4 (Jones was limited to six touches in 20 snaps played), he suffered a setback two days before the Week 5 contest. It was then that coach Matt LaFleur opted to hold Jones out in Week 5, thereby giving Jones two weeks off with the Packers' bye in Week 6.

This week Jones acknowledged feeling the best he's felt since the injury and said he's been able to do more in practice than he had been previously, increasing his confidence in his leg. All LaFleur would say Friday after Jones remained limited for a third straight day was "we'll see how he's feeling." Jones said he hopes he can "bring a spark" to his offense and fantasy managers are no doubt hoping the same.

Christian McCaffrey suffered an oblique/rib injury in Sunday's game and left briefly in the third quarter, returned for one 6-yard run late in the same quarter, then exited again and did not return. Before he went to the locker room (after his second exit) McCaffrey could be seen performing stretches on the sideline. It was unclear when exactly he was injured and the 49ers were uncertain initially whether it was an oblique muscle injury, a rib injury or both.

The obliques -- diagonally-oriented muscles that attach to the ribs and pelvis -- are responsible for both rotation and flexing the trunk as well as core power and stability. Because of their rib attachments, it can sometimes be difficult initially to determine whether the injury is muscular (oblique strain) or some form of a bony or cartilage injury to the ribs themselves.

After McCaffrey underwent an MRI Monday, the 49ers sounded more optimistic about his potential to return for next Monday night's game, calling his status day-to-day. Expect the Niners -- and McCaffrey -- to allow him up to game time to make the decision on his availability.

Deebo Samuel left last Sunday's game late in the 1st quarter with a shoulder injury, but he was actually injured on the first play from scrimmage. Shanahan said Samuel tried to stay in the game but it quickly became apparent that "he couldn't use his left arm" so they had to remove him. The injury was a hit to the shoulder that didn't seem egregious but, as Shanahan noted, "it just connected right."

On Saturday, Shanahan told reporters that a CT scan taken later in the week revealed a "hairline fracture" (earlier X-rays and MRI were negative). He said Samuel would be out for Weeks 7 and 8 and then the team will see where things stand after the bye. Typically, it takes 4-6 weeks for a fracture to heal and it depends where the fracture is specifically within the shoulder, but it's conceivable that Deebo could potentially be available after the bye -- IF all goes well.
