Bill to increase Supreme Court judges introduced in Senate
Bill was tabled by Senator Abdul Qadir which proposed 20 judges in SC
Islamabad: A bill proposing an increase in the number of Supreme Court judges was introduced in the Senate on Monday.
Senator Abdul Qadir presented the bill, which has been sent to the relevant standing committee for further review.
The proposed amendment suggests that the Supreme Court should have 20 judges, excluding the Chief Justice.
However, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) opposed the bill.
“There are over 53,000 cases pending in the Supreme Court, and it can take nearly two years for a case to be scheduled for a hearing,” Senator Qadir explained.
He emphasized that most judges are occupied with constitutional matters, making it essential to increase the number of judges to address the backlog.
“To clear this backlog, the number of judges needs to be increased,” he added.
