Islamabad: Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Major General (Rtd) Hafeezur Rehman on Tuesday said that social media platform "X" was blocked on the directions of federal government.

Speaking to media in Islamabad, he said that "X", formerly known as twitter, would be reopened on the directions of government. “The platform has seen a high volume of complaints in Pakistan, and its case is currently under hearing in the Sindh High Court,” he added.

The Chairman highlighted that in 2023, India experienced 116 internet shutdowns, while Pakistan only saw seven instances. He emphasized that while the PTA does not support internet shutdowns, national security remains a priority.

The Chairman informed that during Ashura, on the 10th of Muharram, mobile services were suspended in some areas, but internet services were only temporarily halted in specific regions at certain times.
