Powerful tornado wreaks havoc in several villages of Czech Republic
A powerful tornado has wreaked havoc in several villages in the south-eastern Czech Republic, leaving more than 150 injured and causing major destruction.
According to details, the massive tornado accompanied by storm and strong winds blew off roofs from a several buildings in the southern Breclav and Hodonin districts, overturning cars and uprooting trees.
Several people took to social media to share videos of the worst-hit areas that looked like a war zone.
Rescue teams comprising hundreds of personnel have been deployed to the affected areas from across the country and also from neighboring Slovakia and Austria.
Reportedly, half of the village of Hrusky was destroyed by the tornado. In the town of Hodonin, several old homes and a local zoo has caused severe also been reportedly destroyed.
The tornado also caused major traffic jams and power blackouts, blocking entire motorways and leaving over 100,000 homes without electricity overnight.
The Interior Minister of Czech Republic Jan Hamacek has described the situation as very serious, saying that all available rescue units were being sent to the scene.
The minister, who has arrived in the disaster-hit region, said that a state of emergency had been declared.
