10 dead, 11 missing after Spanish trawler sinks off Canada
Several dead after trawler sinks off Canadian coast in bitter Atlantic waters
Madrid: At least 10 people have been killed while 11 are missing after a Spanish fishing boat sank off Canada's east coast on Tuesday.
As per details, the fishing vessel was carrying 24— including 16 Spanish, five Peruvian and three Ghanaian nationals.
The crew of the Villa de Pitanxo sent up a distress beacon after getting into trouble about 280 miles off Newfoundland.
In the meantime, a Canadian rescue mission has also been launched— deploying fishing boats, a rescue ship and a helicopter.
Rescuers had been able to get to three survivors who were found in a lifeboat suffering from hypothermia and were airlifted to safety by a Canadian coast guard helicopter.
Rescuers are hopeful of finding more people alive.
Moreover, weather conditions, including rough seas and fierce winds, were complicating the search for survivors.
"We are following with concern the search and rescue operation for the crew of the Galician ship that sunk in the waters of Newfoundland," Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez tweeted.
The premier expressed hope that more of the crew would be found alive. “Our thoughts are with the families of the crew members and we share their grief”.
The sinking comes on the 40th anniversary of the sinking of the Ocean Ranger oil rig on Newfoundland's Grand Banks.
The rig was demolished by high winds and massive waves, which led to the deaths of 84.
