Kolkata: The pioneer of disco beats, singer-composer Bappi Lahiri is being remembered on his first death anniversary on Thursday (today). 

Born in Kolkata, Lahiri belonged to a musical family as his father, Aparesh Lahiri, was a famous Bengali music composer, and his mother, Bansari Lahiri, was a classical singer. 

Bappi Lahiri inherited his passion for music from his parents and started playing tabla and harmonium at a very young age. Bappi got music education at home as well, but came into the industry because of a famous musician, singer SD Burman.

His real name was Alokesh Aparesh Lahiri. 

The singer-composer, a familiar figure for many with his trademark gold chains that he wore for luck and his sunglasses, was known for his songs in several films of the late 70s-80s. These included "Chalte Chalte", "Disco Dancer", and "Sharaabi"

His last Bollywood song was “Bhankas” for the 2020 film "Baaghi 3". 

The legend made his debut in Bollywood by providing the music score for the 1973 movie, 'Nanha Shikari'. 

The singer's last appearance on the screen was with Salman Khan on reality show Bigg Boss 15.

Bappi Lahiri passed away at age 69 and his cause of death was reported as Obstructive Sleep Apnea
