Former KP IG Nasir Durrani succumbs to COVID-19

On a ventilator at Mayo Hospital, Lahore, Durrani was battling the coronavirus and was being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU).

According to the hospital administration, the Ex-police chief was undergoing treatment at the hospital for the past one week after contracting the coronavirus. But due to ill health, he was facing difficulty while inhaling oxygen and his organs ultimately stopped working.

Nasir Durrani was born on March 17, 1957, and joined the police service in 1982 as ASP.

Nasir Durrani gained nationwide recognition for his work in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police reforms. He was appointed IG Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in September 2013, where he served until March 2017.

He was the founder of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police Rescue 15.

Before he was appointed IG Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2013, he was serving as Additional IG, Anti-Terrorism Force, Punjab.

Considering the performance of Nasir Durrani, former Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had expressed his desire to deploy him in Punjab. However, considering the law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif appointed him as Inspector General of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Nasir Durrani introduced an online FIR registration system in the province, set up model police stations and structured cells to liaise between the police and the public.

He also introduced several reforms that were widely accepted by the provincial police.

During his tenure as IG KP, Durrani introduced a strict accountability policy in the police force, and dismissing around 800 policemen, and awarded other punishments to over 6000 others.

 After introducing police reforms in KP, PM Imran Khan described the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police as an ideal police force and gave credit to Nasir Durrani in addition to his government.

After retirement, the PTI government appointed Nasir Durrani as the head of the Punjab Police Reforms Commission but he resigned shortly afterwards.

Pakistan Monday has reported 73 deaths and 5,152 new cases of coronavirus in one day as the third wave of the pandemic continued to rage across the country.

According to National Command and Operations Center (NCOC), around 5,152 cases of coronavirus were reported while 73 people succumbed to the disease in the last 24 hours, taking the total death toll to 16,316.

The total number of confirmed cases reached 761,437.

As many as 662,845 patients have recovered from the disease with 4,515 critical cases.
