Karachi: Newly-appointed caretaker Sindh Chief Minister Justice (retired) Maqbool Baqir on Friday affirmed his commitment to discharging his constitutional responsibilities without succumbing to any form of external influence.

In an interaction with the media in Karachi on Friday, Justice (retd) Baqir asserted, "I am not under any political pressure, nor will I yield to any such pressure."

When questioned about the anticipated schedule for the upcoming general elections, the caretaker chief executive clarified that determining the date for the polls to the Sindh Assembly falls within the jurisdiction of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). He emphasized his inability to interfere with the ECP's mandate.

While the interim CM reaffirmed his dedication to upholding the Constitution and adhering to the law, he made it clear that he would not be party to any actions that contravene these principles. "My obedience is solely to the Constitution and the law," he affirmed, seemingly addressing speculations regarding a prolonged interim administration.

On the subject of his interim cabinet, CM Baqar revealed that consultations are ongoing for the selection of cabinet members. He indicated that the incoming cabinet would be streamlined and formed in stages. "We will be appointing members of the incoming cabinet gradually," he stated.

In response to another inquiry, he emphasized the importance of accountability under the law and the Constitution, asserting that all individuals, including himself, should be subject to scrutiny by competent institutions.

Justice (retd) Maqbool Baqar was nominated as the caretaker chief executive of Sindh by mutual agreement between the then Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and Leader of the Opposition Rana Ansar just moments before the deadline expired.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) had proposed his name for the position of interim CM.
