Tech billionaire told his 44.8 million followers that he will be taking off from the platform without citing a reason for his decision. For how long he will be taking a break is also unclear.

"Off Twitter for a while," Elon wrote.

The move came after a number of his recent posts encouraged a stock market frenzy driven by an army of Reddit-informed retail traders.

Last week, he tweeted in support of retail investors on website Reddit which caused dramatic shifts in financial markets, with the price of bitcoin rising 15%.

Musk also overtook Amazon boss, Jeff Bezos, to become the world's wealthiest person last month, which resulted in surge of Tesla's share price over the past year with a fortune estimated at $185 billion.

Earlier, the US Securities and Exchange Commission, accused Musk of misleading investors by tweeting about a possible withdrawal of Tesla from the stock exchange and was forced to step down as chairman of the Tesla's board in 2018 after a serious run-in.
