Paris Olympics 2024: Indian wrester Phogat disqualified due to weight
Phogat, who had beaten Cuba's Yusneylys Guzman in the 50kg category semi-final, was scheduled to face America's Sarah Hildebrandt in the final today
Paris: Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the Paris Olympics gold medal competition for being just 100 grams over the weight limit.
Phogat, who had beaten Cuba's Yusneylys Guzman in the 50kg category semi-final, was scheduled to face America's Sarah Hildebrandt in the final today.
According to The Indian Express, on Tuesday night, Phogat's weight was about 2 kilograms over the limit. She spent the night jogging, skipping, and cycling to shed the excess weight but was still 100 grams over the 50-kilogram limit in the morning.
The Indian Olympic Association confirmed her disqualification at 8:30 AM Paris time due to the weight issue. Despite the team's best efforts throughout the night, Phogat's weight remained slightly above 50 kilograms, leading to her disqualification from the event.
This disqualification denied Phogat the chance to become the first Indian wrestler to win an Olympic gold medal. According to the Olympics website, Sarah Hildebrandt will now compete in the final against Cuba's Yusneylys Guzman, whom Phogat had previously defeated in the semi-final.
