Olympic star Arshad Nadeem and Senate Chairman Yusuf Raza Gilani were also present at event
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif raised the national flag at the Pakistan Monument in Islamabad on Wednesday to mark the 78th Independence Day.
Alongside him were Olympic gold medalist Arshad Nadeem and Senate Chairman Yusuf Raza Gilani.
Shehbaz also placed a floral wreath at the monument and prayed for Pakistan's progress. Children dressed in colorful outfits, holding flags, participated in the ceremony, as the national anthem played.
In his address, the Prime Minister wished the nation a happy Independence Day and expressed gratitude to Allah for the country's freedom. He praised Arshad Nadeem for making the nation proud with his Olympic victory.
Reflecting on Pakistan's history, Shehbaz lamented the gradual decline in various sectors since the country's founding in 1947. He acknowledged the public's struggles with inflation and unemployment, noting that exports cannot grow without lowering electricity costs.
He promised upcoming relief in electricity prices and hinted at a five-year economic plan he will announce soon.
Shehbaz stressed the importance of self-accountability and planning for the country's future. He drew a comparison with China, acknowledging that Pakistan, once ahead, has fallen behind.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed Pakistan's unwavering support for the people of occupied Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine.
