New Zealand defeats South Africa by 50 runs to reach ICC Champions Trophy Final

(Web Desk): New Zealand beat South Africa by 50 runs to secure a place in the ICC Champions Trophy final, where they will face India in Dubai on March 9.

South Africa, chasing a tough target of 363 runs, ended up with 312/9 in their 50 overs despite a strong fight from David Miller at the end.

The Proteas’ chase began poorly as opener Ryan Rickelton was dismissed by Matt Henry for just 17 runs in the fifth over with the score at 20. After that, Rassie van der Dussen and Temba Bavuma worked together to stabilize the innings. The pair put on a crucial 105-run partnership for the second wicket, with both scoring half-centuries. Bavuma scored 57 off 71 balls, while van der Dussen made 69 off 66 balls, hitting four fours and two sixes.

However, their efforts were undone when New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner dismissed Bavuma in the 23rd over. Van der Dussen followed shortly after, falling to Santner as well, leaving South Africa at 161/4.

South Africa’s hopes rested on David Miller, who fought back with a brilliant century. Miller scored an unbeaten 100 from 67 balls, including 10 fours and four sixes. Despite his efforts, South Africa couldn’t get close to the target, finishing at 312/9.

Santner was the star bowler for New Zealand, taking 3 wickets for 43 runs in his 10 overs. Matt Henry and Glenn Phillips took two wickets each, while Michael Bracewell and Ravindra contributed one wicket each.

Earlier in the day, New Zealand put up a massive score of 362/6 in their 50 overs after winning the toss and deciding to bat first. The Blackcaps got off to a steady start, with openers Will Young and Rachin Ravindra putting on 48 runs for the first wicket. However, Young was dismissed for 21 off 23 balls in the eighth over, caught by Lungi Ngidi off a delivery from Kagiso Rabada.

Kane Williamson then joined Ravindra and the two of them took control, sharing a strong 164-run partnership for the second wicket. Ravindra, who had been in excellent form, made 108 off 101 balls, including 13 fours and a six. He was dismissed in the 34th over.

Williamson followed up with his own excellent innings, scoring 102 off 94 balls with 10 fours and two sixes. He and Daryl Mitchell added 39 runs for the third wicket before Williamson was dismissed. Mitchell continued to play aggressively, scoring 49 off 37 balls, and Glenn Phillips added 49 from 27 balls. Michael Bracewell contributed 16 from 12 balls, helping New Zealand finish with a commanding total.

For South Africa, Lungi Ngidi was the best bowler, taking 3 wickets for 72 runs in his 10 overs. Kagiso Rabada took 2 wickets but could not stop New Zealand’s batting onslaught.

In the end, New Zealand’s all-around performance, especially their batting and Santner's bowling, proved too strong for South Africa, and they will now face India in the final.
