The X social media platform has been up and down all morning, with brief but repeated outages preventing posts from loading across both mobile and desktop. The first widespread issue started at around 5:40AM ET this morning, according to Downdetector, leaving timelines consistently unable to refresh on mobile apps and some X users stuck in an endless loading loop.
We have reached out to X and will update this story if we hear back. There has not been any response, however Elon Musk tweeted at about 1:30PM ET blaming a “massive cyberattack,” which is a claim we’ve heard before from Elon.
> There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against 𝕏.
> We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved.
> Tracing …
In an interview with Fox Business, Musk said that “we’re not sure exactly what happened. But there was a massive cyberattack to try and bring down the X system with IP addresses originating in the Ukraine area.”
An error message keeps appearing on the web version of X that says “Something went wrong. Try reloading” after attempting to open or refresh a page, and we’ve occasionally seen Cloudflare error pages noting a Host Error connecting to X.com.
The X loading issues appear to be impacting users globally according to NetBlocks, with reports coming in across other social media platforms noting the outages. Reports of outages popped up sporadically, with X usually going down for several minutes at a time before users are able to refresh their feeds again.
X competitors like Bluesky, Threads, and Mastodon have so far remained active and accessible, giving X users alternative platforms to jump to while X works on its issues.
Updates, March 10th: Added details from Elon Musk shared in a tweet and in a Fox Business interview.
