KWSSIP, in collaboration with NRSP, establishes social mobilization network in Soba Nagar

Karachi: Soba Nagar, a long-neglected neighborhood in Karachi’s District Central, has faced numerous challenges over the years. Like many other marginalized settlements, its residents have struggled with fundamental issues related to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). For a long time, these problems remained unresolved, not due to a lack of awareness, but because individual efforts alone could not bring about meaningful change.
In underprivileged areas, people are well aware of their hardships—lack of education, healthcare, employment opportunities, gas, electricity, and poor sanitation systems with contaminated water and clogged drains. However, when individuals attempt to tackle these challenges alone, the burden becomes overwhelming. Without a collective platform, people feel isolated and powerless, hoping that someone else will intervene. As a result, progress remains stagnant, and essential issues persist.
To address this, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (KWSSIP), in collaboration with the National Rural Support Programme (NRSP), has established a social mobilization network in Soba Nagar. This initiative has led to the formation of WASH Committees and a Community-Based Organization (CBO)—a revolutionary step for the area.

Now, instead of relying on individual efforts, residents are working collectively to find sustainable solutions to their problems. The establishment of the CBO has empowered the community, ensuring that decisions are no longer made by a few but rather through a collaborative process that prioritizes the well-being of the entire neighborhood. From addressing WASH-related concerns to tackling broader socio-economic challenges, the CBO is implementing strategic, community-driven actions.
A CBO office has also been set up in Soba Nagar, serving as a hub for consultation, planning, and execution. Here, community representatives and organizational members hold regular meetings, draft action plans, and make collective decisions to address their shared concerns. This office is more than just a building—it is the foundation of a transformative movement.
The establishment of this social mobilization network has ignited a renewed sense of hope among the residents. They have come to realize that united action is far more powerful than isolated efforts.
With determination, passion, and a shared vision for progress, the people of Soba Nagar are no longer waiting for change—they are taking charge of their own future.
