Pakistan imported 17 gigawatts of solar panels in 2024 alone

Islamabad: Pakistan has quietly become the world's largest importer of solar panels.
According to a report by British energy think tank ‘Amber’, in 2024, Pakistan imported more solar panels than any other country.
The report said that Pakistan imported 17 gigawatts of solar panels in 2024 alone.
According to the report, Pakistan's solar imports are surprising because it did not happen under any global investment, national program, or large-scale organized project, but were made possible by the personal efforts of consumers.
The report said that most of the demand for solar panels is from domestic consumers, small businesses, and commercial institutions who want to get low-cost and reliable energy compared to expensive and uncertain government electricity.
According to experts, in 2024 alone, Pakistan's solar panel imports will account for almost half of the total electricity demand in the country.
