Kashmir crisis could spark nuclear war, warns UK foreign affairs committee

London: The UK Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee has warned in its new report on South Asia that the Kashmir dispute could escalate into a nuclear war if meaningful dialogue between India and Pakistan does not begin immediately.

The report expressed serious concerns over India’s continued disregard for United Nations resolutions, human rights violations in occupied Kashmir, and the revocation of the region’s special constitutional status.

The report recommends that the UK apply diplomatic pressure on both New Delhi and Islamabad. It urges continued monitoring of the human rights situation in the region and calls for both parties to allow access to international observers. The British government is also advised to listen to the voices of Kashmiri refugees and respect their concerns.

The report states that India used a suspicious incident in occupied Kashmir as justification for military action against Pakistan, calling this a dangerous and irresponsible move.

Furthermore, the report highlights that India is imposing restrictions on democratic freedoms, suppressing journalism, and limiting political liberties.

According to the committee, in recent years, Pakistan has adopted a strategy of responsibility, patience, and adherence to international law despite regional tensions.

The report emphasizes that the UK should use its historical ties and diplomatic influence to pave the way for peace and stability in the region. It also recommends that the British government adopt a balanced policy based on the values of democracy, rule of law, and human rights.

The UK government is expected to formally respond to the report in the coming months.
