Iran shuts down vital shipping route following American airstrikes

(Web Desk): Following US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, Iran’s parliament has approved the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Earlier this morning, Iranian officials announced the closure of the strait in response to the American attacks, and now the Iranian parliament has formally authorized the move.

The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, is a critical global shipping route — responsible for the transport of 3% of the world’s oil and 5% of LNG.

The narrow strait, only 33 kilometers wide, has the Persian Gulf on one side and the Gulf of Oman on the other. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Iran all rely on this passage to export oil to international markets. In fact, about one-fifth of the world’s total oil supply passes through this vital chokepoint.

Closure of the Strait of Hormuz is expected to cause a major shock in the global oil market, potentially driving oil prices up sharply and further increasing inflation in many countries.

According to global reports, 20 million barrels of oil were transported daily through the Strait last year, accounting for 20% of global petroleum consumption. Additionally, around 3,000 ships pass through the Strait of Hormuz each month.

It’s worth noting that crude oil prices have already risen by 13% due to the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict. Defense and economic experts warn that the Strait of Hormuz is not just a maritime route — it is a lifeline for global energy.
