Trump says TikTok deal near as US, China agree on negotiated solution

(Web Desk): Former US President Donald Trump has claimed that the United States and China have agreed to resolve the issue of TikTok's sale, along with other business matters, through negotiations.

According to Reuters, a conversation between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled for September 19 to finalize the terms.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant and Trade Representative Jamison Greer announced after high-level talks between US and Chinese delegations in Madrid, Spain, on September 15, that both countries have agreed on the framework for the agreements. However, they did not disclose the specific trade terms.

They further stated that the deal pertains to two private entities, but a consensus has been reached on commercial terms.

Trump also posted on his social media platform Truth Social, saying the major trade meeting between the US and China in Europe went well.

He added, "A special company was also part of the deal – one that American youth wanted to protect. They’ll be very happy now."

Trump confirmed he will speak with President Xi on September 19, stating that bilateral relations remain strong.

According to Reuters, the two delegations discussed TikTok’s sale as well as broader economic policies during their meeting in Madrid.

Just two days earlier, China had urged the US to focus on negotiations regarding TikTok’s sale or continued operations in the US, emphasizing that the issue should be resolved diplomatically.

TikTok faces a potential ban in the US by September 17, but Trump has already signaled that he may extend the deadline.

The TikTok ban law, passed last year in the US, requires TikTok to transfer ownership to an American company by January 20, 2025, due to concerns that the Chinese government could access sensitive user data or spread propaganda through the app.

TikTok has consistently denied these allegations, asserting that it has implemented strong data protection measures.
