After UK, Canada, and Australia, Portugal also officially recognizes Palestine as independent state
Portuguese FM said that two-state solution is the only way to lasting peace in the region


After Britain, Canada, and Australia, Portugal has also officially recognized Palestine as an independent state.
Speaking to reporters in New York, the Portuguese Foreign Minister called the decision to recognize Palestine a fundamental and permanent part of Portugal's foreign policy.
Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel said that the two-state solution is the only way to lasting peace in the region.
He admitted that recognizing a Palestinian state does not end the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, stressing that an immediate ceasefire in Gaza is essential.
It is pertinent to note that previously, the UK, Canada, and Australia had also officially recognized Palestine as a state.
British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer officially announced the recognition of Palestine in a video message released on social media.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also said in a message released on social media that Canada recognizes the State of Palestine and offers its contribution to building the promise of a peaceful future for the State of Palestine.

The Australian government has also announced its recognition of Palestine as a state, saying that recognizing a Palestinian state is part of international efforts for a two-state solution.
The Australian government says that steps such as establishing diplomatic relations with Palestine and opening embassies will be considered once the assurances made by the Palestinian Authority are implemented.
