PBS releases trend of price increase in different cities


Islamabad: The price of sugar has surged to as high as Rs220 per kilogram in various cities across the country.
According to documents from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the price of sugar increased by up to Rs. 23 per kilogram in Sargodha and by Rs. 5 per kilogram in Karachi and Hyderabad over the past week, pushing the maximum retail price of sugar nationwide to Rs. 220 per kilogram.
The PBS report further reveals that in Rawalpindi, Karachi, and Sargodha, the price of sugar has reached Rs. 200 per kilogram, while in Hyderabad, it has increased from Rs. 190 to Rs. 195 per kilogram.
Despite these sharp increases, the average national price of sugar actually recorded a slight decline of 12 paisas per kilogram over the past week, bringing it down to Rs. 188.69 per kilogram, compared to Rs. 188.81 per kilogram a week earlier.
One year ago, the average price of sugar across Pakistan stood at Rs. 132.47 per kilogram, the report added.
Meanwhile, market sources in Lahore report a steep hike in local prices, with sugar now selling for between Rs. 200 and Rs. 220 per kilogram in various parts of the city.
