World Radio Day is being observed across the globe on Sunday (today) with a focus on the themes of trust in radio journalism, accessibility, and also the viability of radio stations.

This year’s theme is "Radio and Trust".

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) wants radio stations and listeners to celebrate radio, and the role it plays in society.

On the occasion of World Radio Day this year, UNESCO has called on radio stations to celebrate the Day through three sub-themes which are; Trust in radio journalism: Produce independent and high-quality content, Trust and accessibility: Take care of your audience and Trust and viability of radio stations: Ensure competitiveness.

As per Joint National Listenership Research (JNLR), over 3 million people tune into radio every weekday. On average, adults tuned into their favourite stations for 4 hours every day.

Radio is as popular as ever with 3.2m of US tuning into it every weekday, according to the latest listenership figures. While 53% listen to national radio, the number of those listening to local radio stations is up 1% as is the number of younger listeners, aged 15-34, who listen every day.
