Car slams into carnival revelers in Belgium, kills six
Four killed, seven badly injured as car rams Belgian carnival performers
Brussels: At least six people were killed while over 20 sustained injuries after a car slammed at high speed into carnival revelers early Sunday in a small town in southern Belgium.
According to details, a crowd of over 100 were gathered in Strépy-Bracquegnies, some 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of Brussels, at dawn Sunday for the start of celebrations of the carnival.
The incident occurred in the southern Belgium village of Strepy-Bracquegnies about 5am.
“This Sunday morning, a vehicle collided with… a group of around 100 people which had just left the sports hall to go back up to the center of the village,” the mayor’s office said in a statement.
The cause of the incident was not immediately known.
The driver, however, was intercepted as he attempted to drive away from the scene.
Several media reports said the crash may have been caused by a car that was being chased by police.
It was the first time the carnival had taken place in two years after it was abandoned for two years because of COVID-19 pandemic.
In Germany, a man in February 2020 rammed his car through a carnival procession, injuring dozens of bystanders including children.
Germany has seen several such attacks since, with most carried out by people who were found to have psychological issues.
