In a historic first, AI-powered 'robot lawyer' to defend human in court
‘Robot lawyer’ powered by AI will defend a human in court for the first time in history

History will be made next month when the “world’s first robot lawyer” will take a case in court— with the artificial intelligence (AI) legal assistant helping a defendant fight a traffic ticket.
An artificial intelligence bot is all set to defend a human in court for the first time ever.
According to New York Post, the ‘Robot lawyer’ powered by AI will help fight speeding ticket as it takes first case in court.
The AI, billed as “the world’s first robot lawyer” by the startup that created it, DoNotPay, will run on a smartphone and listen to court arguments in real-time before telling the defendant what to say via an earpiece.
As per reports, the AI has been designed and trained to not react to everything it hears in court. Instead, it will analyse the arguments being made before advising the defendant on how to proceed.
The unprecedented hearing is slated to take place sometime next month, but the makers of the robot lawyer are not disclosing the location of the court or the name of the defendant.
The defendant will only say what the AI instructs them to say in court. Hence, the company has agreed to cover any fines if they lose the case.
Joshua Browder, a computer scientist from Stanford University, founded ‘DoNotPay’ in California in 2015, in order to save defendants money—hoping his app to completely replace lawyers.
DoNotPay CEO said it took a long time to train the AI legal assistant to stick to the truth.
“We’re trying to minimize our legal liability,” he told New Scientist. “And it’s not good if it actually twists facts and is too manipulative”.
