Five-member committee formed to investigate KPO attack

Karachi:  Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ghulam Nabi Memon on Saturday constituted a five-member inquiry committee to investigate the facts behind terrorists’ attack on Karachi Police Office.

According to the notification issued here, DIG Sindh Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) Zulfiqar Larik will head the five-member probe team.

The other committee members are DIG South Zone Irfan Baloch, DIG Karim Khan, SSP Tariq Nawaz and DSP Raja Umar Khatab.

The development took place a day after the terrorists’ attack on the Karachi Police office.

Three terrorists were killed and four people including two policemen and a Sindh Rangers sub-inspector embraced martyrdom in the joint operation of Sindh police and Rangers at KPO, the heavily-guarded Karachi Police Office (KPO) located in the heart of the provincial metropolis.

The reports emerged earlier in the day that major lapses were identified in the security arrangements at the KPO, the office of the Additional Inspector General (AIG) Karachi, which came under attack on Friday evening.

The sources said that the terrorists used the Police Lines to enter the compound while three security check posts at the city police’s chief office were without any official at the time of the attack.

The terrorists, they said, entered the KPO by climbing the rear wall and there was no CCTV camera to monitor the movements.

The sources said that the check post were without the officials even after the attack.  The law enforcement, meanwhile, identified three terrorists who carried out the attack. They said that two of them were from North Waziristan while one was from Lakki Marwat.

Law enforcement agencies (LEAs) launched an investigation into the Karachi police office (KPO) attack.

According to the details, the LEAs launched a raid in Bhens colony and arrested the vehicle owner from colony number 6. The vehicle was allegedly used in the KPO attack.

The police recorded the statement of the owner who had sold the vehicle to the showroom.

“The owner doesn’t know who bought it from the car showroom,” said the police.

Three terrorists were killed in the joint operation of police and Rangers at KPO – the office of the Additional Inspector General (AIG) Karachi. The law enforcers commenced a search operation after the operation.

On other hand, two persons lost their lives and 12 others got injured in the attack.

A sweeper namely Ajmal, 30, sacrificed his life in the  attack while a 50-year-old Ghulam Abbas was a police officer also embraced martyrdom.

The wounded persons included six Rangers, three police including Constable Abdul Latif and an Edhi volunteer Sajid.

Advisor to Chief Minister Murtaza Wahab confirmed that the KPO building has been cleared and three terrorists were neutralized.
