Lahore: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and former President Asif Zardari on Saturday reached an agreement regarding the timely conduct of elections during a meeting held at the Prime Minister's residence.

The meeting between Asif Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Lahore included a comprehensive discussion on the current political landscape of the country.

The sources disclosed the details of the closed-door meeting between the two leaders. It lasted for approximately one hour and covered various crucial aspects of the upcoming elections, encompassing issues related to general elections, seat adjustments, and the practical implementation of the political strategy for the future.

They revealed that both leaders concurred on the paramount importance of ensuring that the elections take place according to the stipulated timeline, firmly asserting their stance against any delay in the electoral process.

The sources also stated that even with the conclusion of the present assembly's tenure, Asif Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif engaged in in-depth consultations, underscoring their commitment to a smooth transition of power.

According to the sources, Asif Zardari proposed concluding the tenure of the current assemblies in the second week of August, a suggestion that received the confidence and support of PM Shehbaz who also reassured their coalition partners regarding the decision.

Both the leaders, they said, agreed on the selection of a politician, instead of a bureaucrat, for the crucial role of caretaker prime minister, demonstrating their commitment to a democratic process.

Asif Zardari acknowledged the pivotal role played by the Prime Minister in finalizing the IMF deal and extended his congratulations on the successful agreement. In response, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed gratitude to the former President for his kind words and support.
