Cowboys' Williams arrested on multiple charges
FRISCO, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys defensive end Sam Williams was arrested Sunday on charges of possession of a controlled substance and unlawful carrying of a weapon, according to Frisco Police.

Williams was pulled over for going 71 mph in a 45 after making a U-turn, according to the police report obtained by ESPN. He had THC and marijuana in the car, along with a Glock 17 with a total of 14 9mm rounds.

According to police, the controlled substance charge is for THC -- not for possession of marijuana -- and is a state jail felony. The unlawful carrying of a weapon is a Class A misdemeanor.

The Cowboys arrived back in Texas early Sunday morning after a preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks. Williams, who was arrested later that day, participated in Tuesday's practice.

Under the NFL's personal conduct policy, Williams is subject to a fine or suspension for the incident.

"Everything I know about it, won't impact his time on the field," owner and general manager Jerry Jones said, while not commenting directly on the arrest.

"This sounds a little hollow but he does and is maturing. And he is," Jones said. "What was he going, 66? Was he going 66 miles an hour? This year? So he's 34 mph less than he was ... so that's improvement."

Coach Mike McCarthy met with Williams on Monday and said the second-year pass rusher "needs to learn from this."

"I think anytime you make mistake, it's a good wake-up call, absolutely," he said. "I believe in Sam Williams. I did when we drafted him and even more so now. So I'm seeing him grow in so many different ways. He needs to slow down. He knows that. So that's the first step."

Last December, Williams was involved in an accident not far from the team's practice facility in which his car was totaled. A month later, he was cited for misdemeanor reckless driving and, according to Plano Police, was driving close to 100 mph in a 55 mph zone and weaving through traffic before the accident.

Williams and the driver of the other car in the accident were not seriously injured, although he did miss a game while in the concussion protocol.
