Islamabad: Chairman of the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra), Waseem Mukhtar, has stated that the current situation necessitates tough decisions to combat electricity theft and prevent further increases in electricity prices.

Addressing the media in Islamabad, Chairman Waseem Mukhtar emphasized the importance of curbing electricity theft, emphasizing that those involved in such practices will face legal consequences.

He underlined that the situation has reached a critical juncture, demanding decisive actions.

Mukhtar highlighted the role of the free market in the energy sector, suggesting that consumers should have the freedom to choose their electricity provider.

Chairman Nepra pointed out that the current electricity production capacity stands at 48,000 MW, with the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) considering the production cost of each plant when distributing electricity.

Regarding over-billing concerns, Mukhtar mentioned that a committee has been established to address this issue.

He stressed the need to take action against staff involved in over-billing and involving the private sector to help stabilize electricity prices.

Mukhtar also clarified Nepra's transparency in determining electricity rates.

He explained that decisions on rate hikes are not made behind closed doors; rather, they undergo a public hearing process.

After these hearings, decisions are made regarding any adjustments in electricity rates.
