Fazal-ur-Rehman says parliament lacks mandate to amend constitution
JUI (F) chief warned that such an amendment could lead to unrest
Islamabad: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Sunday said that the government's intention behind the amendment was to impose martial law.
Talking to media in Islamabad, JUI (F) chief warned that such an amendment could lead to unrest and destabilize the country.
He criticized the government for using the amendment to further its political agenda.
Maulana claimed that the government's intention behind the amendment was to impose martial law, a move he and his party did not support.
"We did not support this move, and any constitutional amendment must be brought through consensus," Maulana emphasized, stressing that the current Parliament lacks the mandate for such a significant change.
Talking about government’s actions against PTI’s political gatherings, he said restriction on public rallies are undemocratic.
He reiterated that there should be no compromise on the powers of Parliament, warning that attempts to sideline Parliament's authority would not be tolerated.
Shifting focus to the situation in the tribal areas, Maulana remarked that conditions seemed more stable before the merger of these regions with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He raised concerns over the growing unrest in these districts, where violence and killings have become frequent.
Maulana called Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister's recent comments as "childish" and divisive. He condemned any attempt to create conflicts between provinces, saying, "Speeches that incite chaos cannot be encouraged. The Chief Minister should not make statements that fuel conflict between provinces."
He called for new elections as the only solution to restore political stability and address the pressing challenges facing the country.
