Sanjrani takes oath as Chairman
Islamabad: Sadiq Sanjrani, candidate for the ruling alliance, has taken oath as Chairman Senate after a dramatic victory in the upper house on Friday.
Sanjrani won the Chairmanship after securing 48 votes as opposed to Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)'s candidate Yousuf Raza Gillani secured 42 votes. A total of eight votes were rejected, allegedly seven of which were polled for Gillani.
Despite the opposition's vehement objections, the Presiding Officer Muzafar Hussain ruled the votes as rejected. Earlier in the day, voting ended at 5 pm sharp, with 98 polled votes while Jamat-e-Islami abstaining from the vote.
Voting is now underway for Deputy Chairman Senate slot, with PDM's Abdul Ghafoor Haideri facing off against Mirza Afridi.
